I found myself wanting to capture a short segment of a DVD recently. Being a novice at the eLearning stuff, I - guess what - googled using the words "DVD", "clip", "copy" and got a site that allows you to download video copy software for up to 10 minutes of video free (you purchase the longer capture version). The site is http://www.aoamedia.com/dvd_ripper_copymode.htm and the program is called a aoa DVD ripper. Was able to take my DVD and copy a four minute segment and convert it to an *.AVI file that my Windows Media Player can read. Any other freebies out there that can do this.
I've used DVD43 to decode DVDs and then used other DVD copying programs to extract the content. Then used other tools to convert the content to formats I can use (like .avi, .mpg, etc). The DVD43 decoder is free, but none of the rest is and none are particularly easy to use.
I'm using something called Handbrake (http://handbrake.m0k.org/?article=details). It is opensource, so it doesn't cost anything. It will do an entire DVD. I'm trying to convert it to mp4 and download to a Zune I got myself for Christmas. I'll let you know my results as soon as it finishes (looks like it will take several hours to do an entire dvd).
