What do you expect to hear when you enter the library? Total silence? A collegial buzz? BTC Library has recently designated a Quiet Zone to try to meet the needs of individuals who need silence to study. It is not a perfect solution because the library's space is very limited, but it is a marked space (and therefore enforceable). Two group study rooms are also available, and individuals are welcome to reserve them - with the understanding that groups can bump a single user. Here is a discussion on whether libraries are still quiet spaces on Library 2.0.
I am glad you have a quiet space BUT I also think that quiet is determined by doors. Your reading room has those, maybe you could put time periods where those doors are closed for TOTAL quiet.
Academic libraries are changing and in respect to that we need to have enough space in BTC to deal with the modernization of INFORMATION, including classrooms in the library, quiet places in the library, and collaboration places in the library---my solution---you need to have a bigger spot---before 2011!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ask-there is no fault in that- maybe you can move into other small places on campus-YES-just ask-all it takes is a sign a few computers and a little marketing!
