At the LinuxFest Party, I had an opportunity to talk with Rob Lamphier and Niall King from Linden Lab, the makers of Second Life. Niall is the Recruiting Manager for Linden. It was a great opportunity for my students to hear from a technology employer about the traits they are looking for. No surprise here - communication and group collaboration skills are mandatory. "But what about the tech skills?", my students asked. "Yes, those are needed, but not without the other.", was the answer.
Niall…

In advance of doing a full-on session with students, I held an eOffice-Hour in Elluminate Live! for my students today. I had previously assigned them a project comprised of a series of steps and related links to help them setup and test their systems audio, video and software configuration. The assignment also included assigned tasks via links to Elluminate Live! participant orientations online - courtesy of Elluminate.
Four folks showed up to test and play, and I was able to spend some time he…

Slower pace with more focus on a limited number of topics.
Spent time practicing group breakout sessions, loading content to Multimedia Libraries, and using the notes tool. I'm ready to start loading content and teaching with the tool. Did I mention that the online and phone support includes help with pedagogy for teaching with the tool? Cool.
Also found some training sessions for participants. I'll have my students watch recorded and interactive presentations on this. Plus there are slides to…

Took the second in the three part series today. It was faster paced than the first and covered using the virtual whiteboard, white board annotation features, saving whiteboards, and moved to application and desktop sharing. There's a bunch of ways you could utilize the whiteboard features in class sessions.
I was especially interested in the application sharing. This feature allows you to show your whole desktop, or just a single application window to your class. You can also allow one or more…

Attended an
online class in Elluminate this morning. It's the first of a three part series in moderating Elluminate classrooms. The instructor was very skilled in managing the students even though we'd all been given moderation rights in the classroom. She demonstrated some good techniques in managing audio control, and how to handle classroom problems with out disturbing the whole class session. Recorded sessions are available t…

So, you're teaching a class with a large online component. Tests, assignments all delivered online. Then the Learning Management System (online classroom) goes down unannounced. What do you do?
Well, that's exactly what happened last night. WAOL went down for "scheduled maintainance" except it wasn't scheduled and IT'S FINALS WEEK! What's worse, for quite a while, there was nobody who could tell me anything about what was going on. A co-worker's scheduled final exam consisted of a room full of…

I've been doing screen capture videos, and have shot home video before including some digital, but have never attempted to do a scripted, work-related video, and have never recorded my own image. So here it is. I put it in the video area of the BTCeLearning site.
It was a big project. The actual planning and recording was the short part. Getting together compatible tools, and getting the video online was much more time consuming. Thanks to Jenn for here help finding a video host that will take…

Found this
article today. What's most amazing to me is that this came from a private school. It speaks highly of Harvard's commitment to the highest ideals of higher education. Some public schools privatize inventions, research and other materials produced with public funding. PUBLIC FUNDING! If a schools purpose is the advancement of knowledge, how does this work? To me it seems that the only rea…

Today, Dr. Cable Green at the SBCTC presented on Open Educational Resources. It was a very nicely done online meeting with eLuminate. I'm a big fan of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and other content, so I was excited to hear what he and others around the state had to say.
There seemed to be a general excitement about using Free/Open licensing for course content. I share this enthusiasm. I think, perhaps, I see the challenge of realizing wide spread adoption of Freely licensed co…

Last Thursday, I held two class sessions using
WiZiQ instead of meeting in the classroom. Today I held two open help sessions, sort of electronic office hours, in WiZiQ. Some first thoughts.
WiZiQ is still in beta. This means that the company doesn't consider the system ready for full production. They are offering it's use to folks for the purposes of sharing it's potential and identifying bugs and missing features. The beta status also means that it h…

This is one of my first attempts with using screen capture video for a tutorial for students. It's one part of a two part demo. They've been assigned work to demonstrate their competency using the program and techniques I demonstrate. I also posted links to primers on the web, introduced the subject in class, and assigned readings of their text teaching the same content. Four learning methods and an assignment to video themselves performing assigned steps.

I've been moving the balance of one my hybrid courses to be more online. This is a first for me. I've been making it work so far using some of the tools mentioned here by Jen.
An example of student submitted work using
Jing can be found at:

Examples of me announcing course activity with Utterz can be found at:…

This
presentation is a how-to on using ExamView quizzes, tests, or whole test banks on Blackboard. I like giving assessments on Blackboard/WAOL, but I like creating them on ExamView. Often I have a testbank that only works on ExamView. This shows how to get around those issues.
I created this presentation with
Jing.…

I've submitted a presentation proposal for the Washington Association of Occupational Educators conference in march. My topic is on integrating Instant/Text Messaging into courses. I've been using Twitter and am looking at Network Text and some others (Jaiku) to get more ideas. If you're using chat/IM, let me know - I'm actively looking for more ideas!
