Fall Quarter of 2008 has been a very busy one. I had 33 students and this is more than I have had in the past. I kept everyone busy and learning as well as helping Washington Dept of Fish & Wildlife with their salmon returns. Our return was not as big as we had forcasted, and between the Sport Fishers and seals, we had a very small return to the hatchery. We had less than 1,000 Chum return to the hatchery pond. The Sport fishers harvested 1,000 or more, and the seals destroyed more than 2,000.

It was a busy qurater, but very good overall. The other new challenge was the 11 week quarter. This worked out fine for me, but I had to make some choices of what I would not get to this quarter, and what I may have to move to next quarter or eliminate all together.

The sports fishers are allowed 2 adult salmon each day as long as they have the proper license and catch card. The seals are still here - alive and well and eating steelhead that are coming in now.

I would be interested in hearing what other faculty and staff found challenging about the new 11 week quarter. What do you eliminate or move forward to the next quarter? I was glad to see so many more students here in our library. Did you know they actually are here waiting for the libary to open at 7:00 a.m.? :0)

Are the sports fishers licensed to harvest the fish? And what happens to the seals?
